John Deere tractors have been a part of Jack Purinton’s life as far back as he can remember. His father Jack Sr. started Barton County Implement in Lamar, Missouri, in 1956. Jack Jr. started his career by working in the parts department and later took over the dealership. He expanded the dealership and established other locations throughout southwest Missouri.
Today, Purinton’s collection of approximately 150 tractors is housed in a former Ford dealership, neighboring Barton County Implement, which is now owned by Heritage Tractor Inc. The collection holds several rare and unique tractors.
Purinton finds the chase as exciting as anything. He has been known to bring home a flat deck trailer with a garden tractor on the gooseneck because it did not fit anywhere else. While not all his tractors are John Deere, “green” is his color of choice. Several of these tractors are special in that their story adds provenance that makes them even more interesting. The featured 1933 John Deere GPWT high-steer tractor is a perfect example.

Jack Purinton’s 1933 GPWT “High-Steer”
Jack Purinton refers to his tractor as his “high-steer” to differentiate the tractor from earlier “side-steer” tractors. High-steer tractors were produced for only few years and fewer were built. Purinton had wanted to add one of these to his collection for years and had his sights set on one not far from home. He would often ask the owner if he wanted to sell it, and the owner always said that he was going to restore it himself.
