As farmers across the United States transitioned to power farming in the 1930s, one of the most difficult hurdles for many to overcome was the fact that their horses had become more than just prime movers. They had become part of the family.
Even after Craig Drury’s grandfather drove down to Barrie, Ontario, Canada, to buy a brand-new Massey-Harris 101 Super in April 1939, Drury Farm’s horses were not sold or retired.
“It was the first tractor on the family farm, but he actually hung onto horses for quite a while after that,” Drury said. “My dad, aunts, and cousins said he liked working with horses. They pulled the wagons up to the threshing machine that the 101 ran, even though there were other tractors on the farm at the time that could have handled it. He wanted to keep them, but you couldn’t afford just to have them stick around, so they had to do something to add value to the farm.”
Equestrian power was eventually phased out, however, after which something occurred that tractor engineers and marketing teams could not have predicted—the tractor became a cherished part of the family, too.
