THE HAYSTACK CRAWLER
The Shultz family’s 1923 Best 30 Tracklayer earned its keep in the hay fields of Nebraska.
as told to Rick Mannen by Ted and Doug Shultz • photos by Brad Bowling
When Doug Shultz was young, he would go on fishing/junking trips with his father George “Ted” Shultz, and the rest of the family, who live in Waverley, Nebraska. They always found time to look for cast iron treasures in the wild, and often stopped to visit fellow collector, Gilbert Fox, near O’Neill, Nebraska, in what is called the grassland country.
Fox had a C.L Best Tractor Co. Model 30 Tracklayer tractor. Doug Shultz would head directly to the Best 30 and dream of not only owning it but restoring and driving it. It was in rough condition with the head off and the cylinders full of water from sitting in the open for many years.
“Every time we would stop by Gilbert’s, I hoped he would sell it to my dad,” Shultz recalled.
Fox would never commit to selling the Best, but Ted Shultz had some single-cylinder gas engines that he wanted. After some wheeling and dealing, he traded the engines for the Best.
“To this day I think it was one of the best trades my dad ever made,” Shultz said.
