A Real Workhorse in the Field

Dale Cook’s 1969 Allis-Chalmers Model Two-Twenty tractor still has some work to do on his Ontario farm.

Dale Cook is a fourth-generation Ontario farmer with a friendly personality, easy laugh, and humble demeanor, although he owns a tractor that could make other collectors envious. Cook’s 1969 Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. Model Two-Twenty is a fine example of this rather rare model, but its low serial no. of 1026 makes it even more special. Between 1969 and 1972, beginning with serial no. 1004, the A-C factory in West Allis, Wisconsin, produced 1,765 two-wheel-drive units like Cook’s, plus 100 with front-wheel assist beginning in June 1970.

Cook loves this massive machine with its dual rear wheels and rich Persian Orange paint. His decision to buy the tractor was based on not only its obscurity, but also warm memories of his family and rural upbringing. He now keeps those traditions alive on his own land in Granton, Ontario, where he farms with his son Jason Cook. Dale’s life was influenced in many positive ways by his father and several uncles whom he admired, and they all farmed with nice equipment.

“One of my uncles, Jim Riddell, who was a mentor to me, was a real Allis-Chalmers guy,” Cook said. “When I started into collecting, this was one of the tractors I wanted to have in the shed. A lot of farmers around here had the Allis-Chalmers One-Ninety, but this particular model was quite rare for Ontario.”
